About Thai Plate:

Despite its uninspiring façade – the restaurant is housed in a squat, boxy building of corrugated siding and large glass windows – the interior of the Thai Plate promises a warm greeting and what has been described in online reviews as having ‘top-notch Thai food’ that ‘never disappoints’. Such is its status amongst the residents of Orillia that TripAdvisor rates it as the number one Asian restaurant and number two restaurant overall in the area, as well as awarding it a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence from 2015 to 2018.

Located on Memorial Avenue in the ‘Sunshine City’, and less than two kilometres from its famous waterfront, Thai Plate first opened its doors on July 1st 2011 and proudly boasts that its owner and chef are Thai. Inside is all about the authentic experience, too: the interior is light and airy with a blend of contemporary and colourful traditional Thai décor, coupled with simple furnishings and a bar and self-service buffet section. The restaurant is finished off with a compact outside seating area on a wooden deck complete with parasols for shade.

  • Vegetarian-friendly has vegan and gluten-free options
  • Casual, relaxed and good for groups or parties
  • Kid-friendly
  • Outdoor seating
  • A large car parking area

Cons

  • Service can occasionally be slow during peak times
  • Interior seating limited to fifty people

The restaurant opens for lunch and dinner, and its menu is huge: hundreds of items are available, and while they are predominantly Thai there are a large selection of dishes from other regions of Asia. Dishes are divided into groups such as mains, appetizers, soups, salads, beef, chicken, noodle, rice and so forth; the menu offers everything from Pad Thai to lemongrass soup to veggie choices including cashew nut tofu. Desserts are also available, including coconut sticky rice with ripe mango or Bua Loy Peuak (coconut cream with taro pearl), and there is a full bar offering both alcoholic and soft drinks.

Every Friday between 11.30 am and 2.45 pm Thai Plate runs it’s locally famous self-service lunch buffet, where for $14.95 ($12.95 for 65+ seniors) you can dine in or take out ‘all you can eat’; the restaurant advises to make reservations for this weekly event due to limited spaces and the popularity of the buffet itself.

Online reviews for Thai Plate are typically very positive and full of praise, especially for the food and customer service. One TripAdvisor reviewer states that ‘Food was wonderful and the place is lovely. Friendly staff who are very helpful’, while over on Google the more than 280 reviews are almost all encouraging, with one patron writing that ‘Customer service was excellent!! So, so happy. The food was also incredibly delicious.’ Of the negative reviews, one on TripAdvisor describes their home delivery meal as ‘everything was dry and ICE COLD’, while on Yelp the one disgruntled reviewer on the website declared the food had  ‘a lack of flavour and was dry.  It lacked value for the price.’
