About Scotty's Restaurant:
Situated in southeastern Barrie, you could blink and miss Scotty’s restaurant as you pass the Heritage Square plaza on Yonge Street. Seemingly bolted on to the end of a drab block of beige-coloured businesses and quick cash stores, the only thing that gives away what might be found inside is the motto on the wall: ‘Simply Good Food’.
This TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence 2016-2017 winner is a casual dining experience and often described in online reviews as a Barrie institution. In marked contrast to the dreary exterior, the inside of Scotty’s is smart, clean and neatly laid out, with a dining area of plush leather banquettes and tables of dark wood, while the bar area boasts flat screen televisions for patrons to cheer on their team while they drink.
The owner, Scott, has assembled a menu of hearty crowd-pleasers, and caters for all ages and even has a good selection of gluten free items. Google reviews of the restaurant do tend to mention that the food, while very good, can be quite expensive for the quality, but there is a wide choice: everything from bourbon steaks to Swiss mushroom burgers to spicy portions of jambalaya can be eaten here. If time is against you or you prefer your own home, many of the menu items can be ordered as takeout, but if you are eating in there’s the added bonus of a full bar that serves a fine selection of red and white wines, cocktails, liquors and a handful of draft beers.
- Casual, relaxed atmosphere
- Enough room for large parties and business lunches
- Roomy bar area with multiple flat screen televisions
- Full gluten free menu
- Kids menu with a small number of choices for children under 12
- Very limited vegetarian and vegan options
- Prices are a little higher than average
- Online reviews have mentioned long wait times and inattentive servers on occasion
Most of the food – such as the hamburgers and beef barley soup – is prepared fresh by Scott every day, and while the majority of reviews are positive, there have been complaints on TripAdvisor and Google that the some of the portions can be a little on the small side given the cost. Service is also described as generally excellent, but a handful of reviewers have complained about wait times and even of staff disappearing for a long time – although this has usually happened during busy periods.
Located in a bustling area of the city, Scotty’s is surrounded by things to do and places to stay is just a short drive from the beautiful western shores of Lake Simcoe, and is open Monday through to Sunday for eating in or taking away for lunch and dinner.
