About Dunlop Street Diner:
A classic diner with American and Canadian inspired cuisines for breakfast and lunch, the Dunlop Street Diner is at 20 Dunlop Street East (Obviously) in Barrie, Ontario. This classic diner transports you back to another era but does it with a modern interior and a vintage vibe that brings a smile to your face.
There is street side parking and free off-street parking; it's wheelchair accessible; has plenty of TVs; free Wi-Fi; packs a takeout meal; and takes reservations. The restaurant is not very big, but besides that, it can accommodate a large group of people and is welcoming to people with children. People can order delivery via Skip the Dishes app.
The place is opened seven days a week, from 7 AM to 3 PM, no exceptions. The diner serves breakfast and lunch from a menu prepared from fresh local ingredients and offering lots of house-made “from scratch” items.
From the many online reviews on Yelp, Trip Advisor, Google reviews and Facebook, and the several articles written about the diner in local publications, I was able to create the following list of pros and cons.
- Delicious meals
- Friendly, efficient staff
- Plenty of house-made items
- Fresh, locally sourced ingredients
- Environmentally friendly place
- Tables packed close together
- Notes on prices of some items
The Dunlop Street Diner has been in business since 2017. In this time, the Dunlop Street Diner has managed to revive an older part of town, with the place being situated in a 150-year-old building. Even though it is renovated to modern standards, the diner has kept its heritage feel. One wall of the restaurant is lined with wooden boards, and the other is an exposed brick wall. There are long seating benches along the walls, and tables and chairs across from it. The walls have TVs on them, and right above the seats, there are old framed photos of downtown Barrie and Dunlop Street from a bygone era.
The tables have vintage-inspired napkin holders, and the food is served on white porcelain plates, coffee is served in plain white china cups, just like they did back in the day. The menu is divided into a breakfast and lunch offer. The breakfast menu has items like eggs, a signature breakfast dish, home-made beans on toast, eggs Benedict in several styles, hash skillets in several options, omelets, sides, light side fare like oatmeal, fruit bowl, bagel and cream cheese, or the sweet side which includes French toast, pancakes and waffles.
The lunch menu has items like poutine, fish and chips, perogies, chicken fingers, and sandwiches like toasted western, peameal on a bun, Reuben, classic chicken club, and BLT smoked pork belly sandwich. People can also order burgers, soups, and salads. Some of the items are available all day, and some are available after 10 AM. Drinks like smoothies, milk, milkshakes, float and hot beverages are also on the menu.
