About Village Genius Pub & Grill:

Right on the corner between McCaul and Dundas in Toronto, there is a pub called the Village Genius Pub & Grill. It has been on this exact location since 2002 (was known as the Village Idiot Pub until Oct. 2019), on 126 McCaul Street, built on the foundation laid by the Gallery Bistro from the 1980s. The name might have changed but the cosy British pub remains and serves a lot of different, mostly European, beers, as well as a variety of pub fare.

There is some street-side parking for cars and bikes. The place is not wheelchair accessible, but there are free Wi-Fi and a TV that is usually on only playing World Cup sports events. It is welcoming to groups; it serves alcohol and has a happy hour. The Village Genius Pub serves a large variety of drinks, over 35 draught beers and a good pub food menu for brunch, lunch, dinner and after hour’s fun. Its working hours are from 11 AM to 2 AM every day, no exceptions.

The Village Genius Pub has been reviewed online on Yelp, Trip Advisor, Facebook, and Google Reviews. After reading these I’ve created a list of pros and cons of this place.

Pros:

  • 36 draught beers
  • Cosy interior
  • A good pub food menu
  • Village Genius Hall of Fame
  • Fun staff

Cons:

  • Notes on high prices of pints

The Village Genius Pub & Grill has been in business since 2002. The place is located on a corner, allowing it to have large garage door-like windows that let in plenty of light during the day and allow a great vantage point for people-watching. The interior is predominantly wood: wooden bar, wooden panels on the walls, wooden chairs, and tables, even the chandeliers above the bar are made of wood.

There are purple and red seating booths that clash with the wooden décor, but this place makes it work. The ceiling is red, and there are cloth napkins on the tables that bid everything together. The décor is simple: wooden and blackboards with beer info on them, as well as different beer bottles on display.

The menu is divided into several sections. The appetizer section has crab cakes, Pierogis, flatbread, hummus, samosas, cheese & beer dip, mozzarella sticks, fried calamari, nachos, fries and poutine, Idiot fries, onion rings, chicken fingers, and wings. There is French onion soup and soup of the day, next there are salads like mixed greens salad, Caesar salad, Greek salad, and Genius salad. Omelettes with different toppings can be ordered here.

There is a good selection of burgers like the basic burger, cheeseburger, Village Genius burger, Piri Piri veggie burger, Piri Piri burger, and a standard veggie burger. The Idiot chef prepares sandwiches and wraps like a tuna sandwich, steak or grilled salmon sandwich and straitjacket club wrap and more.

No British pub far is complete without Shepherd’s pie, Cornish pasty, sausage and mash and fish and chips, or pizza, and the Village Genius Pub menu has all of these items. Patrons can also order entrees and pasta dishes and desserts.

The drink options are the main attraction: 36 draught beers, many domestic and imported bottled beers, beer cocktails, wine, liquor, coffee, and speciality coffees.
