About Spielhaus Board Game Cafe:
Located on 1187 St. Clair West, in Toronto, Ontario, Spielhaus Board Game Cafe offers a very, very wide selection of board games, along with an exciting snacks menu for a great night full of fun. The name of this place is German in origin and means “play-house”.
There is street-side parking in front and a paid parking nearby, and a wheelchair accessible entrance. This café takes reservations and has a TV. During the day, the staff puts out four tables on in front of the café, right on the sidewalk, which are great for having your coffee and people-watching. There is a lot of seating, and the place is accommodating to large groups or people with children. They also serve alcohol.
Spielhaus serves lunch, dinner, drinks, and coffee and is opened from 4 PM to 10 PM on Tuesday to Thursday, from 4 PM to midnight on Friday, from noon to midnight on Saturday and noon to 10 PM on Sunday. It is closed on Mondays.
Even though this place is not in business that long, it has still received plenty of reviews from patrons. I’ve gone over them, and here I bring you the pros and cons of the Spielhaus.
- 2500+ games library
- $6 stay-and-play fee
- Good coffee
- Pleasant interior
- Reasonable and affordable prices
- Notes on late opening time
- Notes on game organisation
The Spielhaus opened in 2018, and it is a family-owned business. The interior is in style with the theme of this establishment. There are plenty of exposed brick walls painted white, black ceilings with exposed ductwork and raw concrete floors. There are interesting shelves on the walls featuring games and other game paraphernalia, as well as several framed posters. One wall has a comic book-like mural. There are green leather seating benches, wooden tables and metal chairs where patrons get to sit, have a meal and play a game. The games are displayed on metal bookshelves around the place, but as patrons have noted, can have a better organising system
Spielhaus serves hot sandwiches like the classic grilled cheese, church street, Spicy 6ix, Kensington and Trash Panda snack. There are cold wraps like Hanlan’s point. BLT wrap and the Parkdale wrap. The shareable plates include classic snack bowl, Pita platter, Nature’s candy, and the Parent’s choice. There are three varieties of nachos, and veggie chilli served here, as well as several salad options. The sweet treats include chocolate chunk brownie, bakes apple crumble, affogato, muffin torte, cookie taco, sundae, cheesecake, cookie, and muffins.
There are hot drinks like hot chocolate, and several types of coffee and cold beverages like soda, smoothies, and milkshakes. Occasionally there are craft ciders on offer, but you will need to follow social media for more info. There are weekly game nights, and Tuesday is tournament night.
